American children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. The most recent Children’s Bureau 2015 Child Maltreatment Report (2017) shows an increase in child abuse referrals from 3.6 million to 4 million, and these estimates are historically under-reported. These claims involve 7.2 million children each year. The report also indicates an increase in child deaths from abuse and neglect, with 3.5 million children requiring post-trauma support.  Child abuse impacts all socioeconomic and educational levels, religions, ethnic and cultural groups. Unfortunately, the United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations – losing an average of 5 children every day at the hands of their abusers.
